Author Interview: Clara Winter

Because vampires = the best of both worlds. Seriously. What’s the best way to bridge historical and contemporary romance? Add immortal beings. Et voila.

My dear readers, do I have a treat for you today! I managed to beg manipulate invite one of my favorite author peers for a sit-down to tell you all about her books!

I met Clara at last year’s Ind’scribe event in Burbank, CA. We were seated at the same table for dinner, wound up chatting, bought each other’s books, you get the drift. Well, the following month, I was able to read her book, Deepest Midnight, first in her Immortal Kindred series showcasing a trio of vampires and their stories of love through the centuries, and I was hooked.

I was trying to find a good time to introduce her series, since we’d already passed Halloween, and realized 4th of July would be perfect!

(Seriously, Emilee? Vampires? Independence Day? Trust me on this, you won’t be sorry. More to come with my next post)

So in anticipation of my upcoming review of the series’ second book, Rebel Heart, I wanted you all to meet this amazing author. Without further ado, I give you:

Clara Winter

Clara Winter, Author of the absolutely amazing Immortal Kindred series!

First, tell us a little bit more about you. What made you become a writer?

I’ve been writing since I was a kid. Writing has always been as natural to me as reading. In elementary school, I wrote a one person play about the end of the world and my teacher set it up so I could perform the play in all the fifth-grade classrooms. From there I was kind of hooked, although I didn’t begin to write novels until a few years ago.

What do you love most about being a writer?

I love seeing the finished product of all my hard work. Reaching the end of a project is so fulfilling. I also love connecting with readers and fellow writers. I’ve met some amazing people so far on this journey.

What is either (or both) your superpower, or the quirkiest thing about you you’re willing to share? (alternate: something unique about you that not many people know)

I’m addicted to escape rooms and solving mysteries of all kinds. My husband and I receive a monthly murder mystery subscription box and really get into it, we get donuts and make coffee, the whole thing.

So let’s talk about your books. What do you have on offer? Steamy, sweet, series, standalone?

The third book in The Immortal Kindred Series is releasing July 9th. These are paranormal romances with historical twists and the heat level varies per book. There will be two more in this series, the final book will release in January 2020.

Is there anything in particular that motivates or inspires your books?

Part of the fun of writing is pulling from all the things I love. I’m a history geek, so each character’s story in The Immortal Kindred Series, has an historical element. For example, in Deepest Midnight, the MC was a French Marchioness during the 18th century. I also love playing with current and historical fashions, and inspiring locations in my writing. A Pinterest board is a great way to generate ideas, I create one for each of my stories.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?

For me it’s two things; procrastination and self-doubt. One of my writer friends once said that self-doubt is a must; meaning we all have it. Pushing past it is a must, as well, but can be a challenge. If you feel it too, just know you are not alone. As far as procrastination, I find myself easily distracted sometimes. It can be hard to put other things aside, but essential if I want to be productive.

What is your favorite part?

Having an outlet to express myself creatively, is the best. Secondly, there is almost nothing better than seeing bits and pieces of ideas come together to form a complete story. Seeing the finished product, a piece you have worked so hard on, is pure joy.

If you had to choose one book for readers to pick up from your collection, which would it be and why?

It’s always best to start at the beginning. Deepest Midnight is the first book of The Immortal Kindred Series. This book follows vampire Millicent who was once a noblewoman in 18th century France. When we first meet Millicent, she is stalking the night in present day Savannah, Georgia. The night turns interesting as she happens upon a movie set, and a man who looks startlingly familiar.
